Statement
My work is about finding a visual way to address my own interior state of being or an issue that captures me and I find needs addressing. The pieces are autobiographical in some sense and deal with what I am trying to make sense of. I have often, especially in my earlier work, used the figure and its gesture as a metaphor describing a state of mind more than referring to a specific individual. The gender and age of the character depended on what energy the figure needed to convey the emotional and psychological narrative I was after. The figures for me were symbols even while having a particular identity. Currently, I am creating figures with a more complete context, as specific individuals having their own narrative.
I have always loved to draw the face. Now I love to sculpt the face. The gesture of the human face and body and how nuanced it is remains endlessly interesting to me in its subtle potential for narrative. Whether I am involved with the figure in a commentary involving a social/ political issue or whether the content leans more philosophical and/ or psychological my work always seems to be autobiographical. All the figures on 2008 were aspects about my own view of spirituality. Since then I have been investigating the notion of JOY. Currently I am revisiting my adolescence and its more difficult aspects.
